Coach Alex with Coda

Coda Liked “The Tucker Hockey Way”!

Player doubt turned to excitement, an amusing and heart-warming Tucker Hockey Story as told by Shawna K, the mother of one of our Summer 2020 Program students.

“Spring 2020 was our first time registering with Tucker Hockey.  Due to COVID -19 our program was cancelled, and we were issued a credit note.  The re-launch of programs, early bird pricing, using our credit and scheduling was (in all honesty) overwhelming.  I first want to thank Candace (Tucker Hockey Administrative Assistant) for her patience, understanding and professionalism in getting us the program(s) we needed to use up our credit, and to secure early bird pricing and work around summer holidays.

Secondly, I need to thank the coaching staff.  Our son Coda is a tough nut to crack.  He loves hockey but is not too crazy about additional practice.  He has a difficult time with being yelled at and does not respond well to negativity.

Driving to the rink for the first of our Tucker Hockey programs involved us talking Coda up and bribing him to give it a chance.  He was dressed in all his hockey gear which made for a very uncomfortable ride and in turn a very miserable kid.  He had worked himself up to the point of throwing up and DID NOT want to go to on the ice.  He was late and figured he would be yelled at and he figured that would set the tone for the coaches being mad at him.  After pretty much losing it we had him convinced to give it a try.  Nothing was said after the ice time, but we had no trouble getting him to go the second ice time (which was weird).

On the way to the rink Coda says to me “so Mom, yesterday I tested the coaches”, confused, I asked what he meant.  Well he says “I was late getting on the ice and no one got mad at me or yelled at me to hurry up.  So then when it came time to do the drill I did it wrong”.  I said, “why would you do it wrong?”  He replied, “I did it wrong (even though I knew how to do it) to see if the coaches would get mad at me”.  When the coach(es) did not yell, did not get mad and only encouraged him and demonstrated the drill again he knew he was going to be fine and that he would enjoy the program.  The skaters worked hard and learned a lot, but we were so impressed that they passed the “Coda test”.  We just want to thank Candace and the coaching staff at Tucker Hockey for making our experience a very positive one.  Coda referred a friend and is excited about future programs with Tucker Hockey.”

Editor’s Note:

Shawna, thank you for your very amusing and heart-warming story. Glad to hear that Coda had an enjoyable and positive experience of Summer hockey development with Tucker Hockey. Every child is difference and unique in their own way. We definitely discovered such is the case with your 10 year old son, Coda! Within “The Tucker Hockey Way”, we try our best to be professional, be inclusive, pass our passion and knowledge of hockey on to our students, improve their skating and hockey skills and try to make a difference.

Coda, you have a good skill set. Keep working hard and keep loving the game! Great things will happen! Best wishes this hockey season.

See you and your buddies soon at a future Tucker Hockey program.
